Display Expert: iPhone 5 Has The “Best Smartphone Display”

iPhone 5 is 18% thinner than iPhone 4S, which is incredible when you consider iPhone 4S was only 9.3mm thick. To reduce the thickness of the device, Apple has used in-cell display technology in iPhone 5.
The technology integrates touch sensors into the LCD, which eliminates the need of a separate touch screen layer.

The absence of a separate touch screen layer not only helps to make the screen thinner, but it also improves the quality of displayed images. Colors get a boost, too, with color saturation that’s 44 percent greater than before. iPhone 5 teardown revealed that this has also helped in improving the repairability of the new iPhone.
But how does it stack up against Samsung Galaxy S III and iPhone 4? Display experts - DisplayMate have posted the results of an extensive analysis of the new iPhone's screen and also published detailed comparison against the iPhone 4 (comes with the same display as iPhone 4S) and Samsung flagship Android-based smartphone - Galaxy S3.
Based on our extensive Lab measurements the iPhone 5 has a true state-of-the-art accurate display – it’s not perfect and there is plenty of room for improvements (and competitors) but it is the best Smartphone display we have seen to date based on extensive Lab measurements and viewing tests. In particular it is a significant improvement over the display in the iPhone 4 with much lower screen Reflections, much higher image contrast and screen readability in high ambient lighting (the highest we have ever measured), and a significantly improved and accurate Color Gamut and Factory Calibration that delivers very accurate colors and very good picture quality. [..] The display on the Samsung Galaxy S III uses OLED technology. It’s a new technology that has not yet been refined to the same degree as LCDs, particularly the IPS LCDs on the iPhones, so it doesn’t objectively test or perform as well as the iPhone 5.
DisplayMate concludes that iPhone 5's display significantly outperforms the displays on the Galaxy S III and iPhone 4.

Benchmarks have also revealed that iPhone 5 is the fastest smartphone that is available currently.
